According to statista social media usage is one of the most popular online activities. In 2021, over 4.26 billion people were using social media worldwide, a number projected to increase to almost six billion in 2027.

Joseph Minde is a Digital Producer at BBC Media Action in Tanzania, he shares some key things to think about before you embark on your social media journey.

Minde says that it is very important to ask yourself the questions below which will assist you to have a nice social media journey.

What social media platforms best suit you?

Know the the characteristic of the social media platform that you want to use as follows; Instagram: Very visual (pictures and short videos), Facebook: It is an older crowd, good mix of words and pictures,Twitter: Very information based, key figures can be found here, Youtube: Long form video

Who are your competitors/role models in the same space?

It is important to know your competitors and your role models who are in the social media performing as social media creators so as to get the updates and understand what they are doing so that you can improve yourself.

Why are you doing it?

Know what you want to achieve when you use social media and mention your objectives of using it as a communication platform to speak or share your thoughts with your audience.

Therefore  If you understand well why you are using social media in storytelling, indeed it will help you to stick with your goals.

Who are you trying to reach?

This is where you identify the targeted audiences you aimed for them to receive your message. Who are they, what do they like, what are their favorite websites/habits.  

By knowing your audience contributes a lot in content production according to their needs and wants.

What do you want your audience to do/learn when you reach them?

You have to outline the issues that you want your audience to learn by creating the content that will inform, educate or entertain.
